Trauma and inclusivity Arts Therapy Derby

Creative & Integrated Therapy Approach

At iD Derby CIC, our work is shaped by both professional practice and lived experience, including neurodiversity within our team. We believe in the transformative power of Arts Therapies for children, young people, and adults who may be navigating the impact of trauma, adversity, or emotional distress.

We are here to support you on a gentle and supportive journey of healing—helping you to explore, understand, and process your experiences in both conscious and unconscious ways. Through creative expression, Arts Therapies can offer a safe space to reflect, rebuild, and reconnect with a stronger sense of hope, identity, and wellbeing.

We also work in an integrated and relational way, drawing on a range of therapeutic modalities to meet individual needs. This may include combining creative arts approaches with therapeutic dialogue, person-centred support, and trauma-informed practice, ensuring that each person receives flexible and responsive care that reflects their unique experience.

This integrated approach is particularly important because mental health needs can vary widely from person to person. Different conditions, experiences, and neurodivergent profiles can affect how someone communicates, processes emotions, and engages with support. By offering a flexible and adaptable way of working, we are better able to meet individuals where they are, reduce barriers to engagement, and provide a therapeutic experience that feels safe, accessible, and meaningful.

We walk alongside each individual at their own pace, supporting them to rediscover confidence, resilience, and new possibilities for the future.

We are deeply committed to equality, inclusion, and accessibility, and we believe that Arts Therapies should be available to everyone in our community. While we value all forms of therapy and counselling, we recognise that creative approaches can offer particular comfort and expression for neurodivergent individuals and those who may find traditional talking therapies more challenging.

To support accessibility, we offer a flexible fee structure wherever possible, helping to reduce barriers so more people can access the support they need.

Together, we aim to break down barriers and open up safe, creative pathways to healing and growth.

Research and Theory

Research into arts-based and integrated therapeutic approaches shows that different modalities can be highly effective in supporting people who have experienced trauma. Studies in arts therapies, trauma-informed practice, and neuroscience suggest that creative expression can help individuals access and process experiences that may be difficult to put into words.

Trauma can often be stored in the body and expressed through emotions, sensations, or behaviour rather than clear verbal memory. Because of this, approaches such as art, music, movement, and drama therapy can provide alternative pathways for expression and regulation. Research indicates that these creative modalities can support emotional regulation, reduce anxiety and distress, and help individuals safely explore and process traumatic experiences at their own pace.

An integrated therapeutic approach, which combines creative modalities with talking-based and relational support, is also shown to be beneficial. This flexibility allows practitioners to tailor support to individual needs, which is particularly important for people with complex trauma, developmental trauma, or neurodivergent profiles. Evidence highlights that when people feel safe, understood, and not forced into a single way of communicating, engagement and therapeutic outcomes improve.
